Investigations
Criminal Investigations
The Criminal Investigation Division in which plain clothes detectives belong. Officers are required to have had at least two years as a uniformed officer before applying to transfer to the branch and receive further training when they do so. Officers are involved in the investigation of major crimes such as rape, murder, serious assault, fraud, and any other offenses that require complex detection. They are responsible for acting upon intelligence received and then building a case, from analysis of the initial incident through to arrest and prosecution of any suspects.
Smaller police stations usually have more uniformed officers than Criminal Investigation Officers.

Crime Prevention
A police officer and a Crime Prevention Practitioner formerly known as a Community Service Officer are deployed to each district to act in a proactive approach to crime prevention. The team addresses complaints along with evaluating needs in their district's communities. They also function as the district liaison for the department's Neighborhood Watch Program.
Interagency Narcotics
The Narcotics Unit is composed of detectives assigned to investigate activity involving the illegal selling, buying and possession of dangerous drugs and narcotics. Detectives assigned to the Narcotics Unit receive extensive training in the area of narcotics investigation and utilize various investigative techniques and methods including surveillance, undercover buys, search warrants, and use of confidential informants. Detectives present cases to the Grant County Prosecutor’s Office as well as the United States Attorney’s Office.
